The recent announcement that Joann Fabrics and Crafts is closing has sent shockwaves through the crafting community. This cherished retailer has been a haven for DIY enthusiasts, offering a vast array of fabrics, craft supplies, and inspiration for countless projects. As loyal customers mourn the loss, exploring what this closure means for the community, its impact on the crafting industry, and what comes next for crafters everywhere is essential.

Of the choice between Michaels and Joann, I feel if I were American and close to a Joann Fabrics and Crafts, I would have spent more than I should have in a Joann. There was an ambiance about the store that felt different from Michaels. I cannot explain it other than an emotional response.

Starting Roots of Joann Fabrics & Crafts

Joann Fabrics and Crafts has been a go-to for hobbyists and professional crafters since its inception in 1943. With a wide range of products, from fabric and sewing supplies to home décor items and crafting tools, Joann cultivated a lively community. Its stores weren't just retail spaces; they were places where creativity thrived, workshops were held, and friendships blossomed over shared crafting experiences. Nationwide, there were over 850 Joann locations, each serving as a local beacon for crafting enthusiasts.

Consumers are Changing Behaviour

The retail landscape is evolving, and certain stores may not endure. In Canada, we've seen the loss of some iconic retailers. I sometimes believe that expanding isn't always beneficial, so I've decided to stop opening new locations and concentrate on enhancing the experience at existing ones.

Sometimes, the employees themselves can be problematic, but it's important to remember that the store is staffed by local individuals who are your neighbors. We often overlook the stress and pressure they experience while working there.

I was considering the local pizza shop, which is part of a chain. With the advent of DoorDash and other delivery services, the necessity of hiring drivers has disappeared. Although Daniel and I haven't used these services to get food delivered, it's incredibly convenient for many people, and in some situations, it's the only way they can receive their food.

The Closure Announcement: What Happened?

The closure of Joann surprised many customers. The decision is due to a combination of economic difficulties and changes in consumer behavior. Brick-and-mortar stores like Joann have struggled against intense competition from online retailers. A 2022 report indicates that about 22% of consumers now prefer to buy crafting supplies online, significantly dropping foot traffic and sales at physical locations.

Increased costs of goods, supply chain issues, and a general economic downturn have impacted discretionary spending. Although Joann tried to adapt by boosting its online presence and diversifying its product range, the challenges were too great in the current retail environment.

The Impact on the Crafting Community

The closure of Joann Fabrics and Crafts is more than just the loss of a retail space; it marks a significant shift in the crafting landscape. Many individuals considered Joann a haven—a source for materials and a venue for learning new techniques and connecting with fellow crafters.

Loss of Community and Connection

Joann's stores were community hubs. Many customers participated in workshops or attended events held in-store. The loss of these opportunities resonates deeply within the crafting world. For example, Joann offered over 20 crafting classes, ranging from beginner sewing to advanced painting techniques. With the closure, customers must seek new venues to foster their passion and creativity.

Availability of Supplies

A significant concern for avid crafters is the availability of materials. Joann was known for its extensive variety of fabrics, specialty items, and seasonal décor. For instance, the store offered over 500 fabric types per location, ensuring that crafters could find just the right match for their projects. As stores close, customers may struggle to find these specific items. Smaller craft shops may not have the same inventory or variety, adding to the frustration. Additionally, while online shopping provides convenience, it often lacks the tactile experience of browsing in person, making it challenging for crafters to gauge fabric texture or color accurately.

Explore Local Craft Stores

Supporting local businesses can foster community and uncover unique items that larger chains might not offer. For example, many local craft stores carry curated selections, artisan patterns, or locally made supplies that can lead to innovative projects. These smaller shops are often eager to connect with their customers, offering personalized recommendations.

This may be an opportunity for independent retailers to open again that may have been forced out of business. There's something extraordinary about supporting local businesses. You are helping your neighbour and in turn, receiving service or items that you want.

Embrace Online Shopping

Though many might miss in-person shopping, online retailers have significantly expanded their offerings, providing a vast selection and competitive prices. Websites dedicated to crafting supplies often feature daily deals that can save shoppers money while broadening their choices. For instance, a well-known crafting website boasts a catalog of over 75,000 products, catering to every crafting need.

Join Crafting Groups Online

With the growth of social media, numerous crafting groups allow enthusiasts to share tips, project ideas, and resources. Engaging with these online communities can be inspiring and help crafters maintain connections. Nearly 69% of crafters report that they find motivation in social media groups, leading to new projects and collaborations.

The Future of Crafting

While the closure of Joann Fabrics and Crafts presents challenges, it also opens doors for growth within the crafting community. Crafters have always shown resilience and adaptability.

A Rise in Indie Businesses

As consumers seek alternatives to large chains, a surge in independent businesses will likely follow. Emerging entrepreneurs who focus on niche markets, such as eco-friendly materials or specialized crafting tools, can fill the gap left by Joann. This movement could enrich the crafting landscape, providing fresh options tailored to local tastes.

Innovation in Crafting

Crafting is evolving with technology. From digital cutting machines to online tutorials, innovations are making crafting more accessible. For instance, platforms offering step-by-step videos can help beginners master skills quickly. Crafters can embrace these trends and explore new methods to refine their skills or teach others in their communities.

Embracing Change Ahead

The closure of Joann Fabrics and Crafts marks the end of an era but opens the door to transformation within the crafting community. While there is a sense of loss, embracing local stores, exploring online options, and engaging with innovative practices can help sustain creativity.

Crafting thrives on adaptation. The community will continue to inspire, connect, and create, reflecting a spirit that never dims. As we navigate this transition, supporting one another and discovering new opportunities will help keep the creative flame alive and vibrant.
